The beginning of an exploration to find solutions….
I find myself in an interesting space as our world and my country goes through a major transformation – I am finding myself transformed especially in a political mindset. Where I am finding myself is one more of a moderator, the middle ground, the listener, the observer, the friend, the compassion, the open mind, etc.
What I am finding is that I have friends on both of political spectrum and I love them all dearly – I don’t judge them – I respect and honor their opinions. What comes to me in all of the turmoil is that the solutions to our problems will not come from proving who is wrong and who is right and forcing our will and ideas on others – where the solution comes from is focusing on our commonalities and working from there. I am opening this up for discussion, to search for a place of solutions, one in which we can all work together to make the world a win-win for all. This is just the beginning and I am open to all of your ideas.

How often to we find ourselves bogged down by being too serious in our job search, in our business or even in our day-to-day life? We get overwhelmed with to do lists, action items, etc, etc. I wanted to take this month to talk about how important it is to incorporate fun into each day – the magic in that is that it unleashes the creativity within us, allows us to make connections we may not have made other ways, and just makes the journey more enjoyable.
I have made this video to share this concept with you – enjoy and have fun!!

Always Be on Your A Game Especially in a Down Economy
I recently heard a story from a friend of mine who had an intern working for her. She had set up a perfect opportunity up for her intern – even though it was unpaid – it provided the intern with much needed business experience to help increase her skillset/enhance her resume as well as lead to contacts in her dream field. Well basically the intern dropped the ball on her projects with the justification that it was unpaid and she needed to spend her time on other things including looking for her job. Well guess what happened next? Yes you guessed it – the intern interviewed for a job and used my friend as a reference. Do you think that my friend could give her intern a stellar reference, which is crucial to stand out in this competitive market? No, obviously not – the intern had not delivered on her promises to complete her work. My friend had to clearly state the truth that this person could not meet deadlines and did not take the initiative. Lesson learned – treat every opportunity seriously and go over and beyond the call of duty – you need to do what it takes to make yourself stand out by not only living up to your obligations, but doing a great job even in an unpaid internship. The truth is that people are doing whatever it takes to stand out in this economy, which includes internships to gain valuable work experience and stellar references. If you can’t deliver, there are 100 people in line behind you that would happily take an unpaid internship to get valuable experience and a strong reference for a dream job, so remember to be on your A Game at each opportunity – it may well be your ticket to finding your dream job.

Pink Slips Can Lead to a Rosy Forecast
I recently contributed to an article for the La Jolla Light entitled "Pink Slips Can Lead to A Rosy Forecast." The journalist Maria Connor called me saying I know there has to be some positive in this economic storm, can you please share the positive that you have seen. The truth is that from November - January, I supported many layoffs in both English and Spanish and was on the front lines - I could see how hard it was on many people but at the same time I saw many positive aspects coming from this storm. You can see these insights in the article in the La Jolla Light - http://www.lajollalight.com/life/255197-pink-slips-can-lead-to-rosy-forecast

Dream Job Success Story - Don't Give Up on Your Dream
I was so happy when I opened up on my email on Saturday and read about someone who succeeded in finding a job they are passionate about in a down economy. Gail shared her story how she heard me speak at a Jobing.com Career Expo last Fall and that she followed the steps that I presented to her that resulted in her success - that made my day. I am encouraged to here of many people finding jobs they love and I share Gail's email to me to serve as inspiration to you to not give up on your dream:
Dear Marcy,
After being fired from my last job in October 2008, I found myself relieved and scared. I was relieved because I was really tired of being underemployed in a “survival” job. I knew the career field that would stimulate my mind and diminish that sense of depression I found with my job. I gradually found myself scared because while there were millions of people who were unemployed due to lay offs, being fired and having to explain that situation was frightening. At last count, I had applied to well over 120 jobs in five months with only three interviews! So, instead of taking desperate measures applying to any position available, I made my job search specific and applied to positions that I really wanted to do. For the first time in my life, I followed my dream and despite all the obstacles - my job finally came through! I found this position through an online job search website. I started to grow weary and doubt my abilities these last few months, but your "Five Steps to Living Your Passion in Your Career" really helped me get through this tough time! I know some people thought I was CRAZY because I put all my focus on finding my dream job vs. finding ANY job. There are too many people who get up day after day and go to work at jobs that they aren’t passionate about! I just couldn’t see myself making the same mistake of taking a job out of fear when I knew in my heart I wanted a position that could give me so much more! I HAD to believe in myself, learn to get over my fear of speaking to people I didn’t know and network, and lean on my awesome support team that encouraged me along the way! Thank you Marcy for helping me to uncover my passion despite the odds! I'm really excited about my new job and my future!!
Thanks again, Gail Hill
If you want to learn about the steps that Gail took - make sure you pick up a copy of Marcy's book "Finding Your Passion: An Easy Guide to Your Career Success" available on Amazon for preorder.
The greatest part is that Gail is now helping others on their journey.

Dear Marcy,
After being fired from my last job in October 2008, I found myself relieved and scared.

Sigue Adelante/Keep Moving Forward
Sigue Adelante/Keep Moving Forward
By Marcy Morrison, Careers with Wings (www.careerswithwings.com)
Currently, we are continually bombarded with the news of layoffs, an increasing unemployment rate and the economic downturn. I find that many people are desperately seeking solutions, hope and practical tools during these times and as a career strategist, I feel a sense of responsibility to step up to the plate and provide this service. I also am a strong advocate that people should not give up hope on searching for the job that they love even if they have to create a short-term solution in the process of getting to that dream.
To start, I would like to share that I was greatly inspired when speaking to a group of workers who were recently laid off, all originally from Mexico. We were speaking about how they were taking the news of a recent layoff and they said honestly, we have all that we need to be grateful, we have our family and our health. Another said, I have all that I need to take my next step – my brain, my hands and feet. They immediately came from a place of resourcefulness and were willing to put together even multiple jobs to do what it takes to make ends meet until they figured out a long-term solution. Even after a layoff and tight economic times, this group is confident that they will find their next employment step and follow the philosophy of “sigue adelante” or keep moving forward.
How can others use this philosophy combined with other tools to find their next step:
Step 1: Stay positive. It is key to remain positive in the midst of the negative news so you can present yourself in your best light when you are entering into an interview. The key to staying positive is to surround yourself with positive people and build a support team. I encourage you to find a mentor via networking or consider hiring a professional coach to help you remain positive and to receive practical tools for your job search. It is also helpful to read inspirational books, such as “The Success Principles” by Jack Canfield. Check in regularly with people that truly believe in you and support you to keep you on track and your confidence up. Make sure that you are maintaining a balance in your life and take care of yourself by incorporating fun and exercise into each day. Take time each day to make a gratitude list, the truth is that we all have something or many things to be grateful for and when we are focused on this as opposed to the negative, we will be coming from a much more positive space while we are looking for a job.
Step 2: Become the expert on marketing and selling your strengths and value. Get clear on what you love to do and what your strengths are. Once you are clear on your interests and strengths, you will be more confident in marketing and selling your skills. Take the time to analyze the value you have provided to past companies and practice clearly and effectively presenting this value so you can stand out in an interview. If you can present yourself with a positive attitude combined with an excellent presentation of your value, you are making yourself much more competitive. Especially in this economy, it is a good idea to examine areas where you may need some more training and consider taking classes to increase your skill set and marketability.
Step 3: Sigue adelante (keep moving forward)/resourcefulness. It is important that you learn to block out the negativity around you and stay focused on your goals and keep moving forward. After graduation, my dream was to work in Latin America saving the world. I graduated in the middle of a recession, so I constantly heard that not only was I not going to find my dream job, I would be lucky to find any job. I didn't let that discourage me; I stayed focused on my dream and landed my dream job with the Inter-American Foundation doing grassroots development work in El Salvador. Also consider setting a short-term goal which may entail doing a job that you may not be 100% passionate about, but at the same time keep moving towards the goal of finding a job that you are passionate about. For example, when I moved to San Diego it was the middle of a recession and I worked in a restaurant, volunteered/interned to make connections, and attended graduate school. Be resourceful, examine your skills and see how you can put together multiple opportunities for the short-term.
Step 4: Networking. 80% of all jobs come from networking and this is where you need to spend the majority of your time looking for a job. A lot of times, attending events can be expensive but a critical way to meet people in your field of interest. Contact the event organizer and see if they need volunteers and if so, take advantage of this golden networking opportunity. When networking, make sure you can articulate what you want to do and what you have to offer in a 30 second presentation. People don't have time to listen to long-winded stories. Plus you never know when this 30 second pitch may be useful.
Step 5: Set goals/get organized: To ensure success in finding a job, you need to stay focused and organized. This is a great area to leverage the support of your mentor or coach who can keep you accountable for the goals that you have set. Create a tracking system with concrete goals including when you need to find your job and determine what steps you are going to take to make that happen.
It is crucial to “sigue adelante”/keep moving forward. Take that first step by remaining positive and continue taking action each day by following the steps above and you will come out on top.
